Cancer Research
Cancer research, also referred to as clinical trials, is the study of medical treatments in people with cancer. Clinical trials may test new drugs, new approaches to surgery or radiation therapy, new combinations of treatment, or new methods such as gene therapy or targeted therapy.
After laboratory research shows that a new method has promise for preventing cancer, treating cancer or managing the side effects of cancer or cancer care, it must be tested with human subjects in a clinical trial. A clinical trial is one of the final stages of a long and carefully constructed cancer research process.
Our Affiliations
In 1987 Trinity Medical Center made a commitment to play a national role in cancer research. Today, this commitment is paying off by locally providing the latest cancer-fighting interventions for treatment and prevention. As a part of a Community Clinical Oncology Program (CCOP), Trinity Medical Center is a member of the following research groups:
- The North Central Cancer Treatment Group, located at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota
- The Eastern Cooperative Oncology Group
- The Clinical Trials Support Unit
- Mayo Clinic Cancer Research Consortium
- Wake Forest University
These affiliations mean that Trinity physicians are working with cancer researchers at the National Center Institute (NCI) and its network of nationwide cancer researchers.

In addition to our physicians, research nurses are integral members of Trinity’s multidisciplinary team implementing clinical trials. The research nurse is responsible for teaching the patient about the trial, carrying out the physician’s orders and determining how patients are responding to treatments. Patients who are eligible for a clinical trial and choose to participate are followed closely by the research team.
Trinity’s commitment is to bring the newest treatments and hope to people in the Quad Cities.
