The academic year is off and running with faculty, staff and students beginning the fall semester on Monday August 23, 2010. The College welcomed approximately 220 students across the disciplines of nursing, respiratory care, radiology, EMT, paramedic and surgical technology.

The College held its annual kickoff dinner for the faculty and governing board on Thursday August 19, 2010. Kai Swanson, Chair of the governing board paid tribute to Harriet Olson who was recognized as Trustee Emerita with all the rights and privileges pertaining thereto. She was presented with an embroidered afghan recognizing her service and dedication to the College along with an Isabel Bloom statue. Ms. Olson addressed the group reflecting on her career.

Dr. Sandra Bellinger was recognized for her service to the College as Interim Chancellor and presented with an Isabel Bloom statue.

Faculty and staff were recognized for all of their accomplishments and years of service.

    Accreditation Updates

  • The Radiologic Technology Program received full accreditation for 8 years by the Joint Review Committee on Education in Radiologic Technology.
  • The BSN program was re-accredited for 10 years by CCNE with no compliance concerns.
  • The Surgical Technology Program received full accreditation until 2019 from the Accreditation Review Council on Education in Surgical Technology and Surgical Assisting.
  • The Respiratory Care Program received its initial 5 year accreditation from the Commission on Accreditation for Respiratory Care.
  • The National League for Nursing (NLN) will visit the campus in October to review the Associate Degree of Nursing Program.  

Summer Commencement

The College held its summer commencement ceremony for the Accelerated BSN students on Friday August 20, 2010. Nine students along with family, friends, faculty, staff, and special guests were in attendance. Dr. Dara Wegman-Geedey delivered introductory remarks to the group and Dr. Mary Clarke delivered the commencement address.

The students prepared a slide show presentation of their 15 months in the accelerated BSN program. The presentation was touching and provided the professional and humorous side of being a student and moving beyond the boundaries of the classroom into the healthcare environment as new graduates.

Accomplishments

  • The Radiography Program faculty and students competed with their posters in Iowa City and earned one first place and two second places out of 47 submissions.
  • The Galaxy Stars were awarded to the Surgical Technology Program for 100% participation by their students in becoming members of AST and supporting the profession.
  • Tracy Poelvoorde and Cathy Konrad attended the American Association of Colleges of Nursing (AACN) Master's Education Conference, "Master's Education in Nursing: Faculty Preparation for Changing Times," February 25-27, 2010.
  • Cathy Konrad and Sandra Bellinger wrote a chapter titled "Sustaining a Focus Group Devoted to Standardized Language Development: in Clinical Issues in Nursing (8th ed.). Both Cathy and Sandy are Fellows of the Center for Nursing Classification and Clinical Effectiveness at the University of Iowa College of Nursing, and members of a local Focus Group dedicated to developing standardized language. Regina Holly Lange (Assistant Professor, Nursing) is also a member of this Focus Group.
  • Regina Holly Lange was awarded a Trinity Regional Health System 2010 Nurse Excellence Award. Holly was nominated by Chris Kessel and honored with this award at a Nursing Excellence Tea on May 13, 2010.
  • Deb McClellan completed coursework for an Associate of Science degree at Black Hawk Community College in May 2010 and is enrolled in a Bachelor of Science Program.
  • Karen Cummins received notification on April 16, 2010 that the College was selected as the "2010 Community Advocate of the Year" for the ARC of Rock Island County. Karen assigns nursing students in the second year to 12 hours at the ARC Opportunity Center and the Student Government Association gave $500.00 to ARC for diapers. Karen was honored at an awards dinner on April 27, 2010
  • Karen Wilson is qualified as a CoAEMSP site victor. Karen will be performing three EMS program accreditation site visits during the next two years.
  • Mary Ewald received the Red Cross Life Saving Award for helping to administer CPR to a local student who collapsed while running at a Quad City track meet.
  • Rebecca Heick's paper "Occupational Injuries among Emergency Medical Services Providers in the United States" was published in the peer-reviewed Journal of Occupational and Environmental Medicine, Volume 51, Number 8, August 2009, pp. 963-968. She was first author and wrote the paper with two individuals from The University of Iowa (Tracy Young and Corinne Peek-Asa).
  • Cathy Konrad presented a poster," Focus Group for the Development of Nursing Outcomes Classification" at the 4th Annual Research Day at Trinity Center.
  • Diana Werderman has completed the JRCERT site visitor re-accreditation workshop for radiology programs.
