Levels of Rehabilitation Care
Inpatient Rehabilitation Unit
The 22-bed Trinity Rehabilitation Unit offers an array of services to help individuals with a variety of illnesses and injuries. Each patient is evaluated and treated by a team of rehabilitation specialists. Based on individual needs and personal goals for improvement, the team works together to help improve the patient’s functional ability.
To make the inpatient stay as productive and effective as possible, rehabilitation and therapy is available seven days a week.
Daily communication with patients, families and caregivers is an important part of the process. We place a high emphasis on patient and family education. By listening to our patients’ ideas and comments, we are able to evaluate our programs and services to continue to provide compassionate care and treatment.
The Inpatient Rehabilitation Program works with people who have experienced a loss of basic functional skills. Services are delivered in many diagnostic areas including:
- Stroke
- Amputation
- Brain injury
- Pediatrics
- Spinal cord injury
- Neuromuscular
- Musculoskeletal
- Gullian Barre
- Muscular Dystrophy
Patients are admitted into this program after a consultation with a rehabilitation physician. Inpatients must be able to tolerate three to five hours of therapy a day and be in need of at least two therapy services and rehabilitation nursing.
Specialty Programs
We understand that many different factors can bring about a disability. That's why Trinity Regional Health System treats a wide variety of injuries, illnesses and congenital conditions. Many of our patients are recent survivors of stroke. Our specialty programs include treatment for:
- Stroke: Nearly 60 percent of the patients admitted to Trinity Inpatient Rehabilitation suffer from stroke-related consequences. The Trinity staff works to help restore the independence the stroke may have taken away. We use several methods to work toward that goal:
- Increasing muscular strength and endurance
- Improving balance and coordination
- Developing mobility skills
- Performing daily activities
- Enhancing verbal and nonverbal communication, such as reading, writing and cognitive skills
- Education and support help the patient cope with emotional reactions or even depression that may result from a stroke.
- Traumatic Brain Injury: Patients with brain injuries require specialized treatment. The Traumatic Brain Injury Program addresses those needs through specific physical, cognitive, and behavioral treatments.
- Skilled Nursing Unit
- The 29-bed Skilled Nursing Unit provides continuum care for inpatients who require skilled nursing and/or skilled therapy after discharge from an acute-care hospital. Any Trinity physician with TCU privileges may admit patients to the unit, which is Medicare-certified.
Outpatient Rehabilitation Program
The Outpatient Rehabilitation Program involves specific therapies for patients with functional impairments. Outpatients may include former inpatients requiring ongoing treatment upon discharge or individual patients. Any licensed physician may refer patients for outpatient services. Outpatients benefit from individualized evaluation and treatment programs.

- Muscular Dystrophy and related neuromuscular disorders

- Pediatric tongue thrust

Most referrals for physical medicine, rehabilitation and other services originate from:

- Hospitals and other medical facilities
- Rehabilitation facilities
- Insurers and other third-party administrators

Follow-up Care
After finishing any of these programs, each patient is evaluated and given recommendations for ongoing care. The patient’s primary physician also is provided with a written report on the patient’s progress.
